3X Cancer Survivor Artist
UW-Whitewater photo/Craig Schreiner
When I was diagnosed with cancer for the third time I was given a 2% chance of survival.
Against the odds, I have survived.
Against all odds, I am living.
After battling childhood cancer three times I have been healing and telling my story through art. My emphasis is on painting, specifically oil paintings. I find it ironic that the word “paint” can not exist without “pain” being present. Painting has allowed me to release my anguish as I relocate it into my art. Each piece contains a painful moment in my life that brings me one bit closer to resiliency. This process has given me a taste of alleviation from the burdens I have been carrying for the last 17 years. My art is about the pain we must endure in service of healing and the work it takes to become more than just a survivor.

“Being an artist means forever healing your own wounds and at the same time endlessly exposing them.”
